Magazine and Newspaper Design
DNA Magazine covers were more than just eye candy to sell physical magazines and digital subscriptions. As art director, the cover was the most important design, from eye catching typography, to model scouting to being on-set to help art direct the photoshoot.
One of the greatest pleasures about designing for DNA Magazine was that the publication had a wide mix of content, from serious news journalism, to interviews with celebrities, reviews, sponsored content, fun sometimes silly content, to model photoshoot spreads. This allowed diversity and creative artistic direction in my design and layout.
During my time at DNA, I created a new style guide for the cover-to-cover magazine layout which is still being used today.
When Star Observer turned from a weekly newspaper to a monthly Magazine, as the organisations head designer and art director, it was my task to re-design the publication.
The aim of the re-design was to go for a clean, open, simple and elegant design with plenty of breathing space for the magazines long-form, in-depth articles.
The magazine was aimed towards a more affluent reader in the LGBT+ community.
Description
From 2005 to late 2018, I worked in print media designing cover-to-cover for the LGBT+ newspaper turned magazine, Star Observer and then international gay men's publication, DNA Magazine. It was here that I also started my career in social media content creation, journalism and was inaugural in the redesign, development and building of each publications websites and brand re-designs.
